Digital Summer Camp

These are tutorials for my Intro to Animation and 3D Modeling Class. This are to be used as an additional reference for use in the classes and should help you when I'm helping other students or if you for got something.
Setting a project
Basic Maya Interface

This is a quick run through of the Maya interface. I will post up a more thorough Interface walk through soon but this should get you started with where things are.

Modeling a TV pt1
How to Set a Project

This video shows how to create and set a project. Even though this is on a PC/Windows based computer, it's almost exactly the same. You'll just be putting your projects on the graphics class server.

Modeling a Table pt.1
Modeling a TV pt.1

This is the first thing we do using Maya. Modeling a simple TV set. We use the Extrude on a polygon cube as well as the main QWERTY Tools

  • W = Move/Translate

  • E =  Rotate

  • R =  Scale

Tools: Extrude

Modeling a Table pt.2
Modeling a Table pt.1

This is the next basic model we will create and start using the insert Edge Loop Tool.

Tools: Extrude, Insert Edge Loop

Modeling a Fridge
Modeling a Table pt.2

Here we add more details now that you know the basic tools.

Tools: Extrude, Insert Edge Loop, SR (Select Ring), Convert selection to faces,

Modeling a Lamp
Modeling a Fridge

Here we go into the modeling a Fridge and how to soften the shapes with more edges and using the smooth function.

Tools: Extrude, Insert Edge Loop, Smooth

Modeling a Lamp

Here we go into the modeling a Lamp from an image plane. We use the image as our guide to create the model and it's why reference images are so important.

Tools: Insert Edge Loop, Smooth

Modeling a Lamp pt.2
Modeling a Lamp pt2.

Here we go into the modeling a Lamp from an image plane. We use the image as our guide to create the model and it's why reference images are so important.

Tools: Insert Edge Loop, Smooth

Modeling a Lamp pt2. (Sorry, sound cut but you should still be able to follow)

Here we go into the modeling a Lamp from an image plane. We use the image as our guide to create the model and it's why reference images are so important.

Tools: Insert Edge Loop, Smooth

Finishing the Lamp
Finishing the Lamp!

Here we finish the lamp adding final touches of detail.

Tools: Insert Edge Loop, Smooth, extrude

More Modeling Techniques
More Modeling Techniques!

Here we learn the beginning of more organic modeling techniques. We will learn how to create a curve in the orthographic view and how to extrude polygons along the curve.

Tools: Create CV curve tool, extrude face along curve, Insert edge loop properties, Soft select tool

B = Soft Select off and on
B + MMB = Soft Select area of influence

Modeling Techniques pt2
More Modeling Techniques pt2!

Modeling Book n Bookshelf
Modeling a Book and Bookshelves!

Here we create a couple of bookshelves using different techniques.

Tools: extrude, soft select, insert edge loop tool, keep faces together

Setting up for Lights
Setting up for Lights!
Using Mental Ray - Maya 2016

Here we set up the scene brining in our room and setting it up for lighting.

Tools: Backface culling, import, extrude, Assign material to selected

Creating a light bulb
Creating a light bulb and Material!
Using Mental Ray - Maya 2016

Here we model a lightbulb and give it a glowing material to look switched on.

Tools: Creating a Lambert, modified color, ambient color, incadescence and glow

Light Lamp / Lampshade Material
Light & create Lampshade Material!
Using Mental Ray - Maya 2016

Here we light the lamp and room using volume lights as well as create a lampshade that has translucence.

Tools: Creating a Lambert, modified color, translucence, and glow. Volume Light and light linking.

Physical Sun and Sky pt1
Physical Sun and Sky pt.1
Using Mental Ray - Maya 2016

Here we create a physical Sun and Sky with an exposure node.

Tools: Sunshape Directional light created by PhysicalSun and Sky, Exposure Simple in the perspective camera.

Animation Settings
Animation Settings

Here we set up Maya for animation by going through the settings and UI for animation.

Tools: Animation Settings

Setting Keys / Graph Editor
Animation Bouncing Ball / Graph Editor pt.1

Here we set up Maya for animation by going through the settings and UI for animation.

Tools: Set key S

PingPong Ball / Motion Path
PingPong Ball / Graph Editor pt.2

Here start to animate a ping pong ball going down stairs using the graph editor to refine the animation. We also are introduced to the editable motion path.

Tools: Set key S

Bowling Ball
Bowling Ball / Graph Editor pt.3

Here start to animate a ping pong ball going down stairs using the graph editor to refine the animation. We also are introduced to the editable motion path.

Tools: Set key S

Lipsync Audio
Setting Up Audio for Lipsync

Here we get the file we want for Lipsync and edit it and convert it for use in Maya, we also set up the interface.

Tools: Youtube, Audacity

Lipsync Start pt1
Lipsync start

Here we start to use go over the basics of the lipsync. This file had sound issues but still might be useful. The next video has the audio corrected with a different sound file..
